“Big tree in Kea’au” was originally painted in watercolor and was inspired by a huge monkey pod tree in the small east Hawai’i town of Kea’au. Monkey pod trees are not native to the islands but are thought to have arrived as early as the 1840s. The largest of these sprawling trees in Hawai’i can be found on O’ahu but the Big Island has some pretty impressive ones too!
